I have an ancient and dusty A-level in media studies and one of my favourite books is Ernst Fischer’s “The Necessity of Art” ∴ I <3 writing this sort of thing and could frankly keep it up all day w/o too many problems given a decent dare :) It’s been too long~~

I’m not sure how to feel about this picture of Benedict with David Cameron :( That man on the right seems sceptical of their association too though.

To expand. For me, it subverts the dominant tumblr discourse of idealised adjectives to describe British actor Benedict Cumberbatch by applying the overused and essentially meaningless terms such as ‘beauty’ and ‘perfect’, and ‘cheekbones’, by applying them to something generally considered universally mundane i.e PORRIDGE. Thus a series of non-sequiturs on the unintentional hilarity of the objectification of celebrity which leads to such neotenic results such as the ‘Really’ channel. And no doubt something about mocking today’s ideals of masculinity in a hypermediated and hypersexualised society that shows no signs of stopping.
This one in particular adds in a little bit of politics! It supposes a surrealist juxtaposition - the hauntological, illogical presence of Cumberporridge in the illogical and jarring setting of Cameron in the werks canteen. Cameron’s action of drowning the symbolic Cumberporridge (who we can assume to represent the current state of British the-AY-tre) is an obvious reference to the ongoing Tory arts cuts to suppress the - ahem - creative industries.
There are of course, layers of class inherent in this too! The proletariat (represented by the worker), the ruling class (sadly represented by Cameron) and then the symbolic world of ‘the arts’ with its inherent suppositions of poshness and luvvie-ism. Look at the relations going on here! Note that the cumberporridge is currently inaccessible to the worker, and in fact in the entire CONSTRUCTION of this surrealist praxis, Cameron is physically and symbolically whiting out and denying the working mans access to a world of ‘beauty’ and ‘perfection’ (whilst implictly claiming those as everyday values of the ruling class)!
Further, porridge itself can be read as the representation of a more traditionalist value - probably the craft movement vs the ‘arts’ movement - and thus we can conclude that its appearance in the works of cumberporridge is the spectre haunting contemporary culture, a ‘mush’ of incoherent funding strategies and failure to engage with the varied communities of today…
There are also lots of pictures of porridge, and I really like porridge? In fact, I had some porridge today (with jam)!
